♦ The introduction of multiple receive antennas at the base station of a communication system opens new possibilities to apply diversity concepts or array processing methods.

♦ A communication receivers must access all receive antenna signals simultaneously and needs therefore multiple receiver branches.

♦ A channel sounder transmits a periodic test signal. Thus, a fast RF multiplexer can be used to interconnect sequentially each of the receive antennas to a single receiver branch.

♦ This type of channel sounder has been first prototyped in the year 1997, with partial support of the German research project ATM mobil. This is the reason for its name RUSK ATM, which had 8 active antenna elements arranged as a uniform linear array.

♦ Since the measurements of all elements can be arranged in a numerical vector, the expression "Vector Channel Sounder" has been coined for this device.
